Approximately fifty cars have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a statement.
Police state they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored substance.
The fluid had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Police then found many other marked automobiles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials report early analysis indicate the substance was most likely human blood.
"Currently there is no clue as to its source; investigators are presently not informed of any injuries in relation with the occurrence," they added.
Local authorities announced they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the public for information.
An important representative said the attack left him without words and required to be addressed quickly.
"This incident affects the center of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on social media, referring to the death of nine individuals by a shooter aiming at residents of immigrant origin in February 2020.
