2K Games has secured Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently working on the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Management Change Follows Poor Response
The new appointee takes on the leadership position at 31st Union following the dismissal of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's underwhelming unveiling last fall.
Recently, 2K president a key figure notified staff about this strategic move through an internal memo, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had shown the need for a more defined game identity.
The president noted that the developers is now overhauling Project Ethos with a revised vision, aiming to better meet gamer demands.
A Pattern of Key Hires
This announcement follows a similar step taken by the publisher in the summer, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to assist with the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the entire content from Ismailer's announcement:
Dear Team—
I understand you all just completed your town hall - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the good news. Previously I shared you all a note, I stated the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most dedicated and creative developers we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that collaboration to persist.”
With your dedication and versatility, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The player input from last fall’s the game playtest was revealing. It confirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the requirement for a sharper brand.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the criticism to heart and revamped Project ETHOS with a revitalized direction - one that’s poised to deliver on its promise to our players.
The trust in Project ETHOS grows every day. To boost the remarkable progress you’ve made, I’m excited to announce the new hire as the latest Lead of 31st Union. Following a period of discussions, he officially joins us on next week.
Ben’s guidance and experience in the competitive gaming field is considerable, having spent the recent years creating and managing some of the most recognizable series in the industry, for example the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in welcoming him next week. We are all excited to keep witnessing the progress of Project ETHOS in the weeks to follow.
David

Game Details and Vision
The upcoming game was announced in last year in conjunction with a community playtest. Then, 31st Union portrayed the game as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an thrilling evolution on the style."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch reads. "Take on the rivals with unique powers, challenges, and tests that shift every round. Will you withdraw carefully with your collected items? Or go big, risk it all, and pray your group can secure victory? The choice is up to you."
Project Ethos has not yet received an confirmed release date or platforms, but enthusiasts can anticipate additional details as production advances.
