The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Unveil a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG Ever

The speculation about this year's gaming ceremony was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer that included intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.

A Different Direction

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This distinction hints that the team could be crafting a real-time experience rather than another tactical title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it sparked the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—traits that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs only possible by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously permissive, enabling players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be approached in multiple ways, frequently in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, players can anticipate another adventure in this legendary franchise.
