Cancellieri Demonstrates Flashing Moments of Exceptional Talent in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio

The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had allowed a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or did there exist a binding element holding it together to start with? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach in the summer transfer window, only for him to later acknowledge that the board had failed to disclose a registration embargo they were facing for financial irregularities. Rumours that he could resign were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.

Lazio were just as chaotic on the pitch as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. At any given moment, observers have struggled to ascertain if they are improving or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Unexpected Return

A single player kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio this season. He was on the last one on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his owning club were attempting to extend his stay temporarily. The transfer ban forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad with no new signings.

He signed initially during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, subsequently claimed Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."

Discovering His Natural Fit

Maybe Sarri was persistently working to work out the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as a flank player when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
